About This Site
PortsmouthPubs.org.uk was originally conceived as part of a small website that the Webmaster set up in around 2003. The original idea of the site was to display around two hundred photographs that I'd taken of the city's pubs between 1988 and 1991. These photos soon proved to be one of the most popular aspects of the original website, prompting further expansion of the idea, to include information about each pub, including potted histories and architectural notes.

By 2006 it became apparent that a full scale, stand-alone site would be required to showcase the city's pubs and provide more and more information to the ever growing number of visitors to the site. The domain PortsmouthPubs.org.uk was therefore registered and some serious work began in upgrading all aspects of the site, involving hundreds of hours of the Webmaster's spare time. After all, this is purely a hobby which makes no money for myself as the owner.

The WebmasterOf the many emails that I receive from visitors to the site, a recurring theme is that of closed pubs which do not appear within these pages. My reply to everyone is that, whilst I am aware of literally hundreds of other pubs which have existed in Portsmouth over the centuries, I maintain a policy whereby only pubs with accompanying photographs are included. This helps to make the site visually more interesting and not just a tedious list of names and addresses. That said, a comprehensive list is being considered for possible inclusion in the future, as it would appear that demand is sufficient. The sheer amount of work this involves does however mean that no timescale is being given for the completion of such a project.

All information contained on the site has been personally researched and written by the Webmaster. The Pub News page also contains information from a small number of trusted correspondents. The photographs displayed throughout the site have mostly been taken by the Webmaster, with contributions from named others. The black & white photographs on the Closed Pubs pages are a result of submissions from various sources, to which the Webmaster is most grateful.

message to other website owners
Please note that the Webmaster maintains a policy whereby no links to other websites, or advertisements, will be displayed on this site, with the exception of links relating directly to public houses mentioned on these pages. Therefore, unless you are a licensee of a pub detailed herein, please do not ask for a mutual link from your own site. Thank you.

The Webmaster also writes pub news and features for the local Campaign For Real Ale magazine Ale Mail - available from discerning pubs across the city of Portsmouth and beyond.
